Beit Umar 20-8-2009 - International activist was arrested- Palestine/Israel
nternational and Israelis activists and Palestinian farmers toured along the fence that isolate between Biet Umar to the settlement Karmei Tsur.
During the tour appeared soldiers of the Israelis occupation forces and arrested one volunteer from United States in the guilt that he " touched the fence"
The system of takeover Palestinians' lands work so: Around to the settlements is constructed a fence "due to security". The fence is constructed on Palestinian private land. In the duration the land that constructed "for reasons of security" annexed to the settlement as integral part of it.

Measure B By Any Other Name Is Still a Blank Check for Defrauding the Public
You can guess which utility is more open about what's doing, more accountable to the public and, in the case of SCE and DWP, more aggressive about going green.
By law, SCE needs to be pretty transparent so that its shareholders and the public through its regulation by the Public Utilities Commission know what's going on. Its management can be held accountable by shareholders and its board of directors, if not always the public in general.
By practice, the DWP is not only secretive but does its very best to obscure what it's really up to and its management is far more likely to be called on the carpet by IBEW union boss Brian D'Arcy than any mayor or the City Council.
Perhaps that's why SCE is approaching 20 percent of its energy from renewables and DWP about half that percentage, why DWP depends on dirty coal for 40 percent of its electricity and SCE about half that.
Certainly, it's why a 75-word press release was issued Tuesday by Tempe, Ariz.-based First Solar announcing DWP had contracted to build a "large-scale solar power project in Imperial County...(that) will have a generation capacity of 55 megawatts."
And why a few hours later, SCE itself put out a press release announcing First Solar will build two large-scale solar power projects in Riverside and San Bernardino counties in Southern California...among the largest of their kind...(with) a generation capacity of 550 megawatts of photovoltaic solar electricity, enough to provide power to approximately 170,000 homes."
SCE notes it "is the nation's leading purchaser of renewable energy and, in 2008, delivered 12.6 billion kilowatt-hours of energy to its customers from renewable resources - about 16 percent of its total energy portfolio. In addition, the utility delivered more than 65 percent of the solar energy produced in the United States for its customers in 2008."
The best boast DWP can make is that it generates more pollution from coal-generating power plants than any other municipal utility in America.
Not to worry, General Manager David Nahai has a plan to catch up. But it's a secret so he can't tell you about it. The culture of the DWP and Nahai's own mindset require secrecy above all else so that only insiders who might benefit personally or politically are allowed access.
All you the public need to know is that it's going to cost you a ton of money.
The DWP, for instance, doesn't mention anything about the First Solar deal on its website or much else of use to anyone who wants to understand what it's doing. The last press release posted came three weeks ago and declared -- prematurely, if not falsely -- that its new water shortage measures "successfully" reduced consumption.
The website Greentech Media in an article by Ucilia Wang at least supplies some sense of the economic game DWP is playing in signing a power purchase agreement, quoting Mark Bachman, an equity analyst at
Pacific Crest, as saying First Solar "is likely to sell the power plant
to investors before project completion. But the city has an option to
buy the power plant after it's put in service for seven years."
What we're really seeing is Measure B all over again. Except they not only don't want a public debate about what they're doing, they don't want another public vote because they know it would be rejected soundly.
But it's the same blank check for billions of dollars without planning or analysis.
And it has got the same No. 1 goal as Measure B: Protecting IBEW jobs and its industry-leading wage structure, which by the way is set to rise 3.25 percent higher on Oct. 1 thanks to the sweetheart contract the mayor and City Council awarded four years ago with provision for wage hikes as high as 6 percent.
In general terms, the DWP needs to reduce its huge load of carbon pollution and the easiest way to do that is to upgrade coal plants to natural gas, which has the key benefit of preserving IBEW jobs. But that isn't renewable energy, just less polluting.
So wind and solar come into play to meet the 20 percent renewable energy quota by next year no matter what they cost.
It doesn't matter what they cost as far as the DWP is concerned. They have won DWP Commission approval to remove the 4 percent cap on rate hikes for renewable energy, the Energy Cost Adjustment Factor or ECAF.
The ECAF allows for rate hikes to be passed through to ratepayers without going before the City Council or facing meaningful debate or cost analysis.
DWP expects rates to only increase 10 percent a year but they could go far higher since utility officials in their desperation to catch up with other utilities paying above market prices for renewable energy. And that doesn't even taken into consideration rate increases needed to cover the under-funde DWP pension which faces a $450 million annual shortfall -- a fact that officials have done their best to hide from the public.
The council has taken jurisdiction over lifting the cap on ECAF rate increases because it's already a hot-button issue for the citizen watchdogs on the DWP Committee that led the successful fight against Measure B, the kind of issue that is likely to explode in the faces of the politicians when people see their water and power bills soaring higher than their mortgages.
A lot of effort is being put into creating a Ratepayer Advocate office for the DWP but the real solution is to put someone in charge who actually knows how to run a utility, has the short- and long-term interests of the ratepayers as the primary mission and is backed up by city officials who have mustered the political will to bring the IBEW into line with the city's financial realities.
Anything less will lead to a public revolt against policies that cost too much and fail to achieve the clean environmental goals that are widely desired.
Bruno, the LA Watchdog: Why Van Gogh Cut His Ear Off
An art expert, I ain't.
But I know a good story when I hear one like the one in the Dog Trainer today on the Los Angeles County Museum Art, not because of the art - I leave that to Big Dog Eli Broad -- but because the guy who runs the place makes a $1 million a year.
And some of that is our money! And you thought we were broke just because we're letting dangerous criminals out of prison by the thousands and our lives are in danger because firefighters have to take extra time off the job to keep the city's checks from bouncing.
LACMA gets a lot of money from the public, about a quarter of its $74-million operating budget from L.A. County in 2008 -- including $201,432 toward the salary and benefits of Michael Govan, the museums director.
In fairness, and Bruno always tries to be fair, the guy apparently gets high marks for fundraising, which according to him, he does almost every night.
He definitely does not, however, get high marks for media relations. Dog Trainer reporters Alan Zarembo and Mike Boehm asked him about his fund raising schedule.
"Do you have any idea how much that costs in baby-sitting?" he replied.
The reporters added that he said it "jokingly," but it sounds to me like the jokes on us.
Bruno has no puppies around the house, but I imagine if I was pulling in a million bucks a year with taxpayer help, he wouldn't joke about paying the teenager down the block $5 an hour for watching the kids - especially to reporters!
And for the record, Govan has only one kid.
If it would help, Bruno would babysit for free and teach the kid to play poker. Most kids, however, find me kind of scary.

"Really? You Don't Look Gay"
Cashier: Are you excited for the weekend?
Me: Totally! I am so glad it's Friday.
Cashier: What are you going to do?
Me: I really don't know yet, but I think I'm just going to play it by ear.
Cashier: Do you have kids?
Me: No, I don't have any.
Cashier: Are you married?
Me: No, I'm not married (Note: At this point, I wanted to just blurt out that I was gay simply for the fact that from the look on her face, I got paranoid that she was concluding that I was a straight woman who couldn’t “get a guy to commit.” Even the thought of it was painful to me.)
Cashier: Do you have a boyfriend?
Me: No, I don't have a boyfriend. (Laughing) God, you must think I'm a loser, right? But see, I'm gay. And I have a girlfriend!
Cashier: Oh my God, you're gay? You don't look like a lesbian, you're so… pretty! And funny!
Me: That’s so funny! Thanks!
As I left the store, not only was I smiling because she thought I was "pretty and funny,” but I was also experiencing an odd sense of pride that she didn't think that I "looked like a lesbian."
But my bolstered confidence quickly dropped after telling a gay co-worker the story back at the office, when he responded that he was offended for me. He went on to say that if anyone ever told him that he didn’t "look gay," he would confront that person on “what do you think gay looks like?”
He definitely had a point, and it really got me thinking. Did the pride that I took in the cashier's compliment betray a subconscious shame that I felt in "looking like a lesbian?" Was I so conditioned by popular culture to believe that lesbians were all mannish and humorless?
Or was it something else, along the lines of internalized homophobia? Could it be that I took a certain level of pride in being grouped with straight women who are not only glamorized in the media as idealized beauties, but also are what many of us are conditioned to see as plain old socially acceptable? Did I want to be in with the in crowd?
In theory I am proud to call myself a lesbian, I like being attracted to women, and have tons of lesbian friends. But maybe in practice, just as gay men continue to put each other down for not conforming to masculine ideals, many of us, no matter how "butch" we are, continue to prize a more feminine, lipstick lesbian ideal of womanhood?
I don't know. Tell me what you think. Have you ever experienced a similar pride in passing or "fitting in" in the straight world? If so, why do you think that is?

2. Ace Employment Services, Mystery Shopping, and Paid Surveys of Dayton, OH sent an Indianapolis consumer a check for $2700. The consumer contacted the company to see what it was for. The company representative told her she was selected to do some mystery shopping for their company, and she would get paid. She was instructed to deposit the check into her own personal account, then visit a Western Union and wire $2100 to an individual in Canada. When the consumer asked the purpose of doing this, the company told her it was to evaluate the efficiency of Western Union’s service. Problem? These checks are typically fraudulent checks that are written on stolen bank account information. The person who cashes the check winds up paying back every penny and then some in most cases. This scheme continues to be the #1 call the BBB receives. If you, or someone you know, receive a check offering a work-at-home business opportunity, a prize with a check to pay for processing fees, up front taxes, etc., immediately contact the United States Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455.
3. Telecommunication Relay Services (TRS) are used to assist individuals with hearing or speech impairments for communicating over the telephone. Under Title IV of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), all telephone companies must provide free relay service. At first, these relay services were typically through standard phone services, but with the advent of the personal computer and the internet, these services have broadened the ability to its users… and opened the door for fraud. Businesses may receive a relay call where both the relay operator and the business have no idea that the “caller” is really a scam artist. Recent reports indicate the scheme is heavily targeting the auto repair industry. For example, a business receives a relay call. The “caller” claims he is going to have a vehicle shipped to the business for repair and wants to charge the shipping fee to a credit card. Unbeknownst to the business, the credit card number is stolen. The charges typically go through without complications. The business is then directed to wire the money to the customer to help cover shipping costs. It is not until the shipper’s money is wired that the business is notified of the fraudulent credit card, leaving the business to bear the loss. If your business has been a victim of this activity, you can file complaints with both the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov or the FBI’s Internet Crime Unit (IC3) at www.ics.gov.
4. Ever wonder what to do with all of those pesky spam/junk e-mails you get such as “You are the winner of this, that and the other”… or “I am an attorney for your late great, great uncle who has recently passed away and left you millions?”
Forward them! Not to your friends and family, but to the Federal Trade Commission. Unsolicited and scam spam can be forwarded to Spam@uce.gov.
5. Are you on the Do Not Call Registry? If you want to eliminate the risk of being contacted by someone who wants to sell you something you don’t want, potentially having your identity stolen or your bank and credit card accounts drained, or to simply eat your dinner without the interruption of all of those unsolicited calls, register your telephone number on the Indiana Telephone Privacy Registry at www.in.gov/attorneygeneral/consumer/telephone/ or call (317) 232-6201 or toll free in Indiana 1-800-382-5516. You may also register on the National Do Not Call Registry at www.ftc.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222.
Most telemarketers are forbidden from calling numbers on the Do Not Call list; however, there are exemptions such as licensed insurance agents, licensed real estate agents, charitable organizations and newspapers.

Wing Chun AKA Yong Chun
Language : Cantonese
Episodes: 40
Cast:
Nicholas Tse
Sammo Hung
Yuen Biao
Rain Li
Synopsis:
Adapted from the 1982 kung fu classic The Prodigal Son, 2007 period drama Wing Chun teams legendary martial arts stars Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao with Hong Kong heartthrob Nicholas Tse. Twenty-five years after they starred in The Prodigal Son, Hung and Yuen now step into the senior roles, passing the baton to Tse, who is quickly emerging as one of the great action stars of his generation. The young actor has already displayed his fighting in films Dragon Tiger Gate and Invisible Target and dramas Big Shot and Proud of Twins, and to prepare for the shooting of this action-packed series, he especially trained with Wing Chun master Guy Lai. Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung unite for their first on-screen collaboration in years, and with the two veterans pillaring the series, Wing Chun is a welcome return to flying kicks and fisticuffs.
Yuen Biao is martial arts master Liang Zan, the same role he played in the The Prodigal Son, but he who was once young and rash is now a respected master and physician, not to mention the father of two sons. Liang Zan must pass on his kung fu skills to the next generation, but his son Liang Bi (Nicholas Tse) is reckless, aimless, and irresponsible, much like him in his youth. Growing up in the chaos of early 1900s China, Liang Bi encounters countless troubles and trials, romance (with Hong Kong actress Rain Li), and a certain playful white-haired kung fu master (Sammo Hung) who teaches him the art of Wing Chun.

The Bridge to Nowhere (2009) – DVDRip AC3

The Bridge to Nowhere is the story of four young 20-something men from the rough Upper North Side of Pittsburgh. They are stuck in dead-end jobs and struggle with dysfunctional family lives. The guys, inspired by the images of pop culture and the desire to break away from the neighborhood, regularly scheme to make extra money by running minor underground activities, including: sports booking, poker tournaments and house parties. One night during an evening out the four young men stumble across the “new neighbors”, two independent prostitutes, Jasper and Candice, who end up inspiring a new business idea. Trapped in her own existence, Jasper, agrees to join forces with the young men to create, quite accidentally, what turns out to be an empire that launches each of them into financial riches.Hotfile:

Dragon Ball Kai (2009) Episode 15-18 Weekly Updated! [MKV][Mp4]

Episode 15 – Goku in Absolute Peril! Entrust Your Wishes to the Genki Dama
Episode 16 – The Invincible Vegeta Defeated! Son Gohan Summons a Miracle
Episode 17 – Dawn of the Fierce Battle… The Planet of Hope is Piccolo’s Homeland
Episode 18 – The Spaceship that Sleeps in Yunzabit! Blast Off For Planet Namek
The series is being extensively “refreshed” for Japanese TV. It is not new animation, but simply a remastering of the original film. Part of this will be reformatting and extending the picture to 16:9 Widescreen (the Jump image says it will not be a cropping of the series, at least not completely). Through digital processing, the image will be made vibrant. All the grime, damage and noise remaining on the “Z” film will be removed, making the image much clearer in HD.
Dragon Ball Kai will include a complete re-recording of the dialog by most of the original Japanese voice cast, as well as completely new sound design with updated sound effects. The opening and ending themes are completely new, having nothing to do with the original themes. Takayoshi Tanimoto performs the series’ new opening and closing themes, “Dragon Soul” and “Yeah! Break! Care Break!”. Unlike the previous opening and closing credits, this new version has newly animated appearances by Frieza, Zarbon, Dodoria, The Ginyu Force, Nappa, Raditz, Saibamen, and Vegeta.
Non-confirmed reports have stated that the series will be cut down from 291 episodes to approximately 100. Toei Animation stated that the episodes would be edited to more closely follow Akira Toriyama’s original story in the manga, resulting in a faster moving story, and to remove any damaged frames. This may indicate that Dragon Ball Kai will minimize the filler material produced for Dragon Ball Z’s original production run. As of now, only a few minutes of filler material with no impact to the story have been left in, probably to help the chapter reach it’s full 20 min
The “Kai” in the series’ name means “updated,” “modified,” or “altered.” Interestingly, despite the series being only a directors cut of Dragon Ball Z, the Z has been completely removed from the title.

Free Aceh (Aceh Merdeka) Free Aceh Movement [Gerakin Aceh Merdeka (GAM)]
Aceh, also known as Acheh, Atjeh or Achin, is the westernmost part of Sumatra and the part of Indonesia where the Islamic character of the population is the most pronounced. The Acehnese demand for autonomy, expressed in support for the 1950s Darul Islam rebellion, was partially met by the central government's acceptance of a "special region" status for the province in 1959, allowing a higher-than-usual official Indonesian respect for Islamic law and custom. This special region status, together with growing prosperity, brought Aceh into the Indonesian mainstream. This change was reflected in the growing support among Acehnese for the central government, as indicated by votes for Golkar in national elections. In 1971, Golkar won 49 percent of the region's vote; in 1977, 41 percent; and in 1982, 37 percent. By 1987, however, with 51.8 percent of the vote, Golkar obtained its first majority, increasing it in 1992 to 57 percent.
Separatists who sought to establish an independent Islamic state in the Special Region of Aceh in northern Sumatra and combined their religious and nationalist appeal with exploitation of social and economic pressures and discontent, continued to cause unrest in portions of the region. Many Acehnese perceived themselves as disadvantaged in Aceh's major industrial development projects because income flowed out of the region to the center, and outsiders--especially from Java--were perceived as receiving better employment opportunities and the economic benefits of industrialization than did the resident Acehnese. A criminal element involved in cannabis cultivation and trafficking and other illicit activities was also involved in the unrest.
During the early 1990s, the idea of an independent Islamic state was kept alive by the Free Aceh (Aceh Merdeka) movement, known to the central government as the Aceh Security Disturbance Movement (GPK). Thought to have been crushed in the mid-1970s, the guerrilla campaign of the insurgents, under the leadership of European-based Hasan di Tiro and with Libyan support, renewed its hit-and-run warfare in the late 1980s, hoping to build on economic and social grievances as well as on Islamism. But moderately pro-Golkar 1992 election results suggested there was no widespread alienation in Aceh.
Aceh was put under Operational Military status in 1991 after a resurgence of separatist activity. Special permission is necessary for foreign journalists to travel to Aceh. Indonesian Armed Forces [ABRI] reacted with crushing force and, as it sought to root out the separatists, civil-military relations were imperiled. Soldiers fighting separatists have been accused of human rights abuses. Rights groups, citing local residents, say military abuses have involved abductions, tortures, rapes and mass killings.
As of late 1996 the Government claimed that the "Aceh Merdeka" movement had been eliminated, although Aceh was still officially listed as one of Indonesia's three "trouble spots" (along with East Timor and Irian Jaya), and the Government issued public calls for the "rebels" to come home to their families. The Aceh Merdeka movement still exists, but its activities were underground as of 1996. Early in 1998, several caches of foreign arms were discovered, which raised the fear of separatist rebellion developing in Aceh. The incident resulted in the arrest of suspected rebels who were imprisoned and threatened with torture. In addition, criminal suspects continue to be shot and killed by police in suspicious circumstances and disappearances and extrajudicial executions of alleged political opponents occur often. On 07 August 1999 armed forces chief General Wiranto announced a troop pullout and apologized for any excesses. With the revocation of the military operations area status, said Wiranto, the term "security-disturbing movement" (GPK) [government terminology for the Acehnese Muslim-oriented separatist rebels] is no longer relevant, and will be replaced by the term "unauthorized agitation movement" (GPL) or an agitation movement named after its leader.

FriendFeed's Not Dead. While Not Clear, Its Future Could Be Very Big.

Monday's news that Facebook had acquired FriendFeed for an undisclosed sum took many people by surprise, not the least of whom were the site's most-active users, many of whom have made the social sharing and aggregation platform their central nervous system for online activity and community. Initial reactions to the announcement had many people asking questions, extremely concerned that the site - as we know it - was doomed to close, and a lack of immediate denials from the company's leadership was seen by many as an implicit acceptance that yes, the end was near. But in the days following, from what I've seen and heard, it is clear to me that FriendFeed is not going away, that the company's being part of Facebook isn't the end of the world, and that after nearly two years of going it alone, the time had come to make a change.
Since the site launched in beta in October of 2007, and opened up in February of 2008 to the world, FriendFeed has become known for many things. The company's sharp engineers have promoted the site to be at the forefront of innovation on the real-time Web, showcasing advanced search functionality, information discovery and an active, loyal, community. But with the site's wide array of features came a not to be unexpected downside - complexity, which had many wondering how it could attract a user base on the scale of less sophisticated but more popular competitors, like Twitter and Facebook. While even as recently as January, we saw the company's leadership advising us that growth "takes time", this week's move was a clear recognition that in order for FriendFeed to achieve its vision, it needed to team up with a bigger partner - one that had been courting them for years - and it was Facebook who filled the dance card.
FriendFeed Was Always Pursued
Not too long after FriendFeed launched, Facebook called, as did many other companies over time. And while Facebook is known by many as a closed walled garden, where you find yourself reconnecting to people long since forgotten, in sharp contrast with FriendFeed's open nature where you connect to people you've just met, the two companies, through conversations over the last two years, found that they shared a common vision and direction. While the company's dozen or so employees could have kept saying no, stubbornly going it alone, they came to realize that teaming with Facebook made the most sense - giving them an opportunity to take the vision they had and push it within a company that had users in the hundreds of millions, not the hundreds of thousands, which would have been practically impossible given their slow growth rates and other companies' encroaching on their feature set.
More Than Just a Talent Grab
Following news of the acquisition, some have labeled the buy as a "talent grab", with Facebook looking to gain a dozen or so respected engineers. But it was not a talent grab just for the sake of getting good people, but instead, getting good people who were focused on the exact things Facebook needed - including real-time search, aggregation, community, and social messaging. And while it's not exactly clear what the two companies have in mind over the next six, twelve or twenty-four months, as a combined team, the first steps don't involve blowing up the existing community, which should come as a relief to many who thought that was imminent. FriendFeed's leadership has expressed the desire to not only keep the site open and active, but to preserve all the data that has been posted. In fact, just in the last few days, FriendFeed saw the addition of new features, including customizable backgrounds, and small UI enhancements around comments.
Some of the reticence for FriendFeed to loudly proclaim the site and its users' data is safe has come down to the fact that in a sale like this, the acquired company won't always have full say over the future roadmap. Just take a look at any number of recent acquisitions by Yahoo! and Google to see how that has evolved. But the company will soon start to talk about the future of the site, and these announcements will hopefully assuage some of the concerns and fears voiced by many FriendFeed users, who either despise the idea of Facebook, or just expect to be deleted.
So What Happens Next?
The truth is that not even the FriendFeed team has a perfect roadmap in front of them, saying what is next, as part of Facebook. And that has got them nervous too, of course. It took a long time for them talking with Facebook to become comfortable with the idea of an acquisition, and the same gut-level reaction many FriendFeed users had to the news, myself included, was shared at the company's Mountain View headquarters, and their families, or at least it was until they moved out by the end of the week. Their long-discussed plans of developing a unique engineering team and environment at FriendFeed, and about "not being for sale", as we often heard when they were asked, were up-ended, as reality set in, with them turning off their computers, packing up boxes and moving into Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto.
Incredibly, even as many declared the site dead, or swore they were leaving FriendFeed forever, on the news, this past week has seen a renewed spike in terms of new signups and user activity. As the Facebook and FriendFeed news flowed through the Web and got mentioned on the radio or TV broadcasts, user mailboxes have been pummeled with a wave of new connections. And it practically goes without saying that the people who have left FriendFeed due to the announcement are not any more than the number that would have left had FriendFeed needed to dramatically change its focus to finally get that hockey-stick user growth seen by networks like Twitter and Facebook, just like there was a wave of people who left the network when they revamped their user interface this spring to make real-time the default view.
In February 2008, in an e-mail exchange I had with Bret Taylor and Paul Buchheit, two of FriendFeed's cofounders and the public faces of the network, I was eager to let them know a high-profile user had signed up. Paul responded, simply: "One down, 6,652,865,239 to go :)" keeping with his belief that FriendFeed was for everyone, not just the relatively small number of users who made the site their home on the Web. As many of the employees at FriendFeed hail from Google, it's not unlikely they see Facebook's current position as they did Google at an earlier age - having both significant momentum and share, but also much more room for growth, letting them bring FriendFeed a lot closer to that elusive 6,652,865,239 user number.
As the Dust Settles...
In the last two years, I have optimized my online activity for FriendFeed. I have used FriendFeed as my information filter and distribution channel, as it both takes in my activity around the Web, but spits out a subset to Twitter and Facebook. While I don't know if all this information will be on friendfeed.com per se for the rest of eternity, I am confident in saying that all my existing links, data, photos, and files are secure. I believe that the vast majority of things that have attracted FriendFeed's users to participating on the community will start to show up in Facebook as well - if not taking over the site, but being shown in different areas of the network. And while over the years, Facebook has gained a not-so-spotless reputation on the Web for being closed (among other things) partnering with FriendFeed could have a major impact on the company's ability to adjust on the fly and keep growing.
For those people who are very concerned about their data and preserving what they have invested into the site, activity on FriendFeed, like Twitter, is centralized, and therefore, there is not yet a perfect solution to extracting the data and moving it elsewhere. But a new project called CloneFeed is looking to help, and FriendFeed's founders have always trended toward standards and openness. Meanwhile, if you expected them to stop using the site, they haven't. After a few busy days following a practically sleepless weekend prior to the deal's completion, the founders have started posting again. They're not going away, and neither are we. Hopefully, they will talk a lot more about what the acquisition means - as much as they are able - soon. But for now, I'm going to keep using FriendFeed, while also expanding my use of Facebook (just in case), and would welcome that you do also - for now, the little company that could just got some tremendous financial backing and a huge endorsement from one of the leaders on the Web who is growing faster than anyone else.

iPod Touch 3rd Generation?

The person who posted the pictures claimed that it was a picture of the

Engadget ruled this as a fake, claiming it was a photoshop, but later retracted what they said when Covino and Rich decided posted an actual video.
Do you think this is the real iPod Touch third generation, or just a well-planned fake? We’ll be finding out soon enough in September.

Two corporate errors - and two very different responses
Best Buy's Web site advertised - in error - Samsung 52" HDTV's for $9.99, over $1,600 less than the actual price. An unknown number of customers - certainly dozens, probably scores, possibly hundreds - jumped on the offer and bought them in the brief interval before the mistake was corrected. However, Best Buy subsequently announced it would not honor the erroneous price, pointing to a clause in its Web site terms of use that allows it to back out of such deals. Needless to say, the customers concerned are very disappointed.
IHG have taken the opposite approach. Its Crowne Plaza Hotel at Padova, near Venice, Italy, erroneously advertised its rooms for an unbelievable one-hundredth of a Euro (about 1½ US cents) per night, instead of its usual rate of up to 150 euros (about US $212.50). The mistake was allegedly made at IHG's offices in Atlanta, GA, not by the hotel itself. About 230 people jumped on the offer, booking an average of about six nights per person, before the error was detected and corrected. However, IHG have - quite rightly, in my opinion - accepted responsibility for the error, and stated that they will honor the bookings at the advertised price. I'm sure that makes those 230 customers very, very happy!
Look at the difference in approach. Both companies made similar mistakes. One chose to slam the door in the face of those who took advantage of it, leaving them (I'm sure) very annoyed and disappointed. The other stood up and acknowledged responsibility, and will honor the deals made in error. Which do you think now has the better reputation among its customers? Who will gain the most from the publicity surrounding both mistakes?
Bad move, Best Buy - and kudos to Intercontinental Hotels Group. Customer service like that should stand you in very good stead in the future.

Boeing Faces Dreamliner Setback
The parts have been manufactured by an Italian company called Alenia Aeronautica, one that has had significant amounts of experience in producing composite materials. For this reason, industry experts have raised questions whether or not the problem was caused by sheer accident or by general sloppiness on the part of Alenia Aeronautics.
The announcement of this most recent problem, though, came the same day that Boeing announced an indefinite delay of the 787’s first flight due to another structural flaw. According to a Boeing spokesperson, the wrinkling on the carbon composite had already been fixed by applying a patch. It went unannounced because Boeing did not expect the problem to have any impact on the 787’s overall cost or production schedule.

Islam at War: NATO Headquarters Bombed in Afghanistan, 7 Dead, 91 wounded
If victory is not the goal, then what? Why risk American lives? Why put our boys and girls in harm's way of the brutal jihad with no clear stated goal? Why is Obama adding thousands of our military personnel to the Afghan theater of operations, poorly equipping them and strangling the rules of engagement? They will be captured or killed to what end? Without a clear goal, Obama will prove we can't win. Demoralizing the military, yet again.
Just this month brought U.S. deaths to at least 18. That's the number of American military personnel who have died in Afghanistan in August, and this pushed fatalities among foreign troops for the month to 27. July was the worst month to date in the nearly 8-year-old conflict in terms of military deaths; 76 coalition soldiers were killed, including 45 Americans. Where are the daily death roll call the media gleefully reported during the Iraq war? Where are the leftists' anti-war rallies? Afghanistan is the good war, according to the asshats running the country into the ground (vs. Iraq, the bad war). Who decides these things, and why do the American people go along with such stupidity?
7 die, 91 wounded in blast near NATO HQ in Kabul Yahoo
KABUL – A suicide car bomb exploded Saturday outside the main gate of NATO's headquarters five days before Afghanistan's presidential election, killing seven and wounding 91 in the biggest attack in the Afghan capital in six months.
The bomber evaded several rings of Afghan police and detonated his explosives on the doorstep of the international military headquarters, an assault possibly aimed at sending the message that the Taliban can attack anywhere as Afghans gear up for their second-ever direct presidential election. Militants have warned Afghans not to vote and have threatened to attack voting sites.
The NATO headquarters — where top commander U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal is based — sits beside the U.S. Embassy and shares the same street as the presidential palace. The explosion was the first major attack in Kabul since February, when eight Taliban militants struck three government buildings simultaneously in the heart of the city, an assault that killed 20 people and the eight assailants.
Afghanistan has braced for attacks ahead of the election. International workers in the country were planning on working from home over the next week or had been encouraged to leave the country. U.S., NATO and Afghan troops were working to protect voting sites, particularly in regions where militants hold sway.
