Introduction arc
Episode 1 "Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!"
After failing to graduate from the Ninja Academy for the third year in a row, Naruto Uzumaki is approached by Mizuki, an instructor at the Academy. Mizuki tells Naruto that if he can steal the Scroll of Seals and learn one of the forbidden jutsu within it, then he will be allowed to graduate. Naruto eagerly does so, and retreats to the neighboring woods to train while the villagers look for him. Iruka Umino soon finds Naruto, and after Naruto explains why he stole the scroll, Iruka realizes what Mizuki is planning. Mizuki attacks the two, having intended to steal the scroll from Naruto for his own use. As Iruka defends Naruto, Mizuki tells Naruto of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox within him and claims that Iruka hates him for it. Naruto runs off, but stays close by and listens to Iruka and Mizuki's conversation. In doing so, Naruto learns that Iruka doesn't hate him, and as such comes to Iruka's rescue. Using his newly learned Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, Naruto defeats Mizuki. For learning such an advanced jutsu, Iruka allows Naruto to graduate, fulfilling Mizuki's promise.

Episode 2 "My Name Is Konohamaru!"
Naruto meets Konohamaru, the Third Hokage's grandson, during one of the child's attempts at sneak-attacking his grandfather. The attack fails, and Konohamaru believes Naruto to be the one responsible. As such, Konohamaru asks to become Naruto's disciple in the hopes of being able to defeat his grandfather and gain the title of Hokage. Naruto accepts, and begins teaching Konohamaru the Sexy Technique. Konohamaru's tutor, Ebisu, soon finds them and tries to take Konohamaru. To stop Ebisu, Konohamaru uses the Sexy Technique, and when Ebisu is left unfazed Naruto uses his Harem Technique to knock Ebisu out. Konohamaru questions why he was unable to defeat Ebisu by himself, and Naruto replies that becoming Hokage requires a great deal of work for which there are no shortcuts. Konohamaru denounces their student-teacher relationship on the grounds that they are both rivals for the title of Hokage.

Episode 3 "Sasuke and Sakura: Friends or Foes?"
To officially obtain the rank of Genin, Naruto is put into Team 7 with Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchiha. As the three mingle, it soon becomes clear that Naruto likes Sakura but dislikes Sasuke, Sakura likes Sasuke but dislikes Naruto, and Sasuke dislikes them both.

Episode 4 "Pass or Fail: Survival Test"
Team 7 meets their team leader, Kakashi Hatake, who tests the three to see if they'll be allowed to become Genin. Kakashi explains that in order to pass, the student has to retrieve one of two bells on their leader's belt by any means necessary; at most, two can pass. As the test gets underway, Naruto decides that attacking Kakashi outright is the best approach. Naruto's attacks are futile against Kakashi, who easily defends, despite casually reading a graphic novel the entire time. In the end, Naruto falls for a snare trap, prompting Kakashi to come out and lecture him. Sasuke then takes the opportunity to attack Kakashi.

Episode 5 "You Failed! Kakashi's Final Decision"
As Naruto hangs from the tree, Sasuke independently attempts his own efforts at defeating Kakashi, though none prove successful and he is defeated. All the while, Sakura follows Sasuke in the hopes of winning his affection, though she too falls prey to Kakashi. Meanwhile, Naruto escapes from the snare and attempts to steal some lunch, though is caught and restrained by Kakashi. Kakashi lectures the three on their inability to work together, and then allows Sakura and Sasuke to have lunch. As punishment for his attempt, Naruto is not allowed to eat, and anyone who feeds him will fail. Despite this, Sasuke and Sakura feed Naruto anyway, realizing that Naruto will need to be at full strength if they are to work together. Kakashi appears when they come to their decision and passes them; the purpose of the test was to teach the three that protecting one's friends is more important than following rules.

Land of Waves arc
Episode 6 "A Dangerous Mission! Journey to the Land of Waves!"
After Team 7 completes a few miscellaneous missions, they are assigned to escort Tazuna back to the Land of Waves. Early in the mission, the group is attacked by two enemy Chunin. Naruto panics and gets slashed by a toxic claw, while Sasuke deals with the attackers quite efficiently and taunts Naruto. Once the attackers are restrained, Naruto bleeds out the poison he received by stabbing his wound with a kunai, vowing upon the pain in his hand to never be a burden to his friends again.

Episode 7 "The Assassin of the Mist!"
Knowing that being attacked by enemy ninja is not supposed to happen on such a routine mission, Kakashi questions Tazuna. Tazuna explains that the Land of Waves has been taken over by a shipping magnate named Gato, who has impoverished all the people of the country by monopolizing the shipping industry. The only way to revitalize the economy is for Tazuna to build a bridge to the mainland that can bypass Gato's shipping monopoly, which Gato is trying to stop by force. Kakashi decides to continue the mission, but suggests that they must be more cautious. Soon afterwards, the group is attacked by Zabuza Momochi. Kakashi recognizes Zabuza as a formidable opponent and reveals his Sharingan eye. Using his Sharingan to copy Zabuza's Water Clone Technique, Kakashi is able to have a few rounds of water clone encounters with Zabuza.

Episode 8 "The Oath of Pain"
Eventually, Kakashi is caught off guard and is captured in a prison of water. To act upon his former promise of not backing down from a fight, Naruto attacks Zabuza. After a seemingly failed Shadow Clone attack, Naruto passes Sasuke a fuuma shuriken, which he throws at Zabuza. Zabuza catches the shuriken and finds another to have been hiding in the shadow of the first, which he easily dodges. However, the second shuriken is truly a transformed Naruto, who throws a kunai at Zabuza. With no other choice, Zabuza releases the water prison to dodge the attack.

Episode 9 "Kakashi: Sharingan Warrior!"
Kakashi and Zabuza resume their fight. Due to his Sharingan, Kakashi is able to take the upper hand and defeat Zabuza with his own attack. Just as Kakashi is about to make the final blow, a masked boy named Haku arrives and appears to kill Zabuza by throwing a number of needles at Zabuza's neck. Haku claims to be a Hunter-nin sent to kill Zabuza and takes his body to protect the village's secrets. Temporarily satisfied, Kakashi collapses seconds later as a result of fatigue from his overuse of the Sharingan.

Episode 10 "The Forest of Chakra"
Kakashi rests and recovers at Tazuna's home. There, he makes the observation that Zabuza's death was odd, and concludes that it was an act. Elsewhere, Haku revives Zabuza, who promises to crush Kakashi when next they meet. Both Kakashi and Zabuza need to rest a week to recover. With Zabuza's return a likely outcome, Kakashi takes Team 7 to the nearby woods for chakra training, where they learn to walk up vertical surfaces. Sakura performs this perfectly the first time, but Naruto and Sasuke require extra training. Naruto asks Sakura for advice, and Sakura agrees to help him. Kakashi makes the observation that Naruto is finally getting a good grasp on teamwork.

Episode 11 "The Land Where a Hero Once Lived"
Sakura is left in charge of protecting Tazuna while Naruto and Sasuke continue their training. As Naruto begins to catch up to Sasuke, Sasuke casually asks to know what advice Sakura had given Naruto, but Naruto refuses to tell him. During dinner one night, Sakura asks about a torn picture that Inari, Tazuna's grandson, had been looking at. Tazuna explains that the man in the missing portion of the picture was Kaiza, Inari's idol, father-figure, and the hero of the village. He explains that Kaiza's death at Gato's orders crushed the Inari and the villagers, making them lose faith in the possibility of a "hero". Naruto rushes off to continue his training with renewed determination.

Episode 12 "Battle on the Bridge! Zabuza Returns!"
In the woods, Naruto encounters Haku, whom he doesn't recognize. While the two discuss their dreams, Haku explains that one's strength is at its greatest when protecting a loved one. Naruto agrees with this statement, remembering all of the people who have protected him. Sasuke and Naruto soon master tree-climbing, and the two return to Tazuna's home. There, Inari deems their training as pointless, drawing Naruto's final straw. The two engage in a dispute that ends in Naruto calling the boy a self-pitying coward. Kakashi meets with Inari and explains that Naruto wanted him to regain hope and courage, comforting the child. The next morning, Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura escort Tazuna to work, leaving Naruto behind to rest. Upon arriving at the bridge, they find Tazuna's workers unconscious and the air getting thicker with mist. Zabuza and a masked Haku reveal themselves.

Episode 13 "Haku's Secret Jutsu: Crystal Ice Mirrors"
At Tazuna's house, two of Gato's thugs arrive to kidnap Inari's mother. Inspired by Naruto's story, Inari attempts to save his mother by himself. Naruto surprises the thugs and congratulates Inari for finally standing up for himself. Naruto then leaves to join the rest of his team. At the bridge, Sasuke battles with Haku. Haku quickly notices Sasuke's improvement and decides to use his trump card: Demonic Ice Mirrors. Haku traps Sasuke in his cage of mirrors and rapidly shoots ice needles at him.

Episode 14 "The Number One Hyperactive, Knucklehead Ninja Joins the Fight!"
Naruto eventually arrives and manages a sneak attack on Haku. Although Zabuza tries to attack Naruto, Haku asks to be the one to fight him, and Zabuza agrees. Trying to help Sasuke, Naruto enters the cage of mirrors, becoming trapped as well.

Episode 15 "Zero Visibility: The Sharingan Shatters"
Naruto and Sasuke both attempt to destroy the ice mirrors, though both are unsuccessful. This turn of events leads Kakashi to believe that Haku is using a kekkei genkai. He once again reveals his Sharingan in an attempt to quickly end the battle. Zabuza explains that he has learned how to defeat the Sharingan and disappears into the mist. Zabuza strikes, now attacking with his eyes closed, effectively making the Sharingan useless. Zabuza attempts to finish off Tazuna, and Kakashi blocks the attack as a human shield at the last second.

Episode 16 "The Broken Seal"
Naruto and Sasuke are left heavily wounded in their ongoing fight with Haku. However, Sasuke is starting to dodge Haku's attacks and protect Naruto at the same time. As a member of the Uchiha clan, Sasuke has finally awoken his own Sharingan, allowing him to see Haku's movements with ease. Haku goes for a finishing blow upon Naruto, but Sasuke rushes to Naruto's side to stop the attack, taking an apparently fatal hit in the process. When Naruto asks why Sasuke saved him, he claims that it was merely instinct, and falls into Naruto's arms. After admitting that he had promised to not die before killing his brother, Sasuke stops responding. Naruto's anger triggers a change: visible red chakra pours out of his body, which Haku notes is pure evil. Naruto mutates, healing his wounds and sporting claws, fangs, and slitted pupils; the demon fox has been unleashed.

Episode 17 "White Past: Hidden Ambition"
Kakashi senses Naruto's chakra and recognizes it as that of the demon fox, and decides he needs to quickly end the fight. Haku, realizing the danger Naruto now imposes, tries to retreat, though Naruto's increased speed and strength prevent this. Delivering a punch to Haku's face, Haku is sent through the ice mirrors, defeating the jutsu. Before Naruto deals a finishing blow, Haku's mask breaks away, revealing the face of the boy he'd met earlier and stopping Naruto's attack mid punch. Haku realizes that his defeat means that he is of as much use to Zabuza as "a broken tool". Believing that he has lost his purpose for living, he pleads for Naruto to kill him. Meanwhile, Kakashi summons a number of dogs to find and restrain Zabuza. Kakashi gathers chakra to his hand and charges up his Lightning Blade.

Episode 18 "The Weapons Known as Shinobi"
Elsewhere, Inari goes door-to-door in an attempt to rally support for taking down Gato and his men. The villagers refuse, not wanting to fight back anymore. Once he gets home, Inari's mother pleads for him not to go, though Inari insists that he must fight as Kaiza's son. Inari is startled to find many shadowy figures surrounding his door as he heads out. Elsewhere, and after much discussion, Haku finally convinces Naruto to kill him. Hesitantly, Naruto draws his kunai and rushes towards Sasuke's supposed killer. Sensing Zabuza's predicament, however, Haku escapes from Naruto at the last second and takes Kakashi's attack directly to his chest, being fatally wounded in the process. He also manages to cancel out Kakashi's summoning, removing Zabuza's restraints. Zabuza shows no sadness at his partner's death, even attempting to slash through Haku's corpse to cut Kakashi. Fighting with renewed resolve, Kakashi easily overpowers his Zabuza and disables both of his arms. Before the battle can end, Gato arrives with his men and revokes his contract with the weakened Zabuza.

Episode 19 "The Demon in the Snow"
After learning of Haku's death, Naruto berates Zabuza for his indifference about Haku's status. Zabuza reflects on Haku's innocence and dreams, and breaks into tears, conceding defeat. To repent, he rushes through Gato's forces with a kunai in his mouth and kills the businessman, but not without being impaled by numerous weapons. As Zabuza's life falters, Sasuke awakens, Haku never having meant to kill him or Naruto. Gato's men, no longer employed, prepare to loot the town, but are stopped by a mob of able-bodied citizens from the village, led by Inari. With help from Naruto and Kakashi's Shadow clone jutsu, the mob scares the men into retreating. Kakashi approaches Zabuza, who asks to see Haku one last time. Kakashi complies and lays Zabuza's broken body alongside Haku's, where Zabuza expresses his wish to be in the same afterlife as Haku. Haku and Zabuza are buried side by side with Zabuza's zanbato sheathed in the ground as a memorial. The bridge is completed, and Team 7 prepares to leave. The team bids farewell to Tazuna's family while Inari and Naruto have an emotional moment. As they all disappear into the distance, Tazuna proclaims that the bridge will be called the Great Naruto Bridge to signify the strength that Naruto gave Inari who in turn gave to the whole town.

Chunin Exam arc: Phase One
Episode 20 "A New Chapter Begins: The Chunin Exam!"
After a long day of accomplishing missions, Sakura and Naruto meet Konohamaru and his new friends, Moegi and Udon. After insulting Sakura, Konohamaru is forced to run for safety to escape Sakura's wrath, though ends up running into Kankuro, who does not take the accident lightly. Despite his sister Temari's advice and the pleas of all Konoha citizens present, Kankuro threatens to hurt Konohamaru. Sasuke, who had been watching from a distance, saves Konohamaru by pelting Kankuro with a rock. Kankuro prepares to counterattack, but is stopped dead cold by a command from his brother, Gaara.

Episode 21 "Identify Yourself: Powerful New Rivals"
Kankuro and Temari seem discomforted by Gaara's presence; at the same time, all of the Konoha ninja are startled by Gaara's stealthy appearance. As the siblings walk away, they explain that they came to Konoha from Sunagakure to take part in the Chunin Exam, a test to promote them to the next ninja rank. Kakashi later meets with Team 7 and informs them that he has nominated them for participation in the exam. As the three consider the matter on their own, each is attacked by a mysterious ninja, though each defeats him with little difficulty. The ninja later appears before Kakashi and reveals himself to be a transformed Iruka, reporting that all of the Genin tested qualify for the exam. As Team 7 proceeds to the site of the Chunin Exam, they meet Rock Lee and his teammates. Lee asks to Sakura to be his girlfriend. She refuses, and Team 7 goes on its way.

Episode 22 "Chunin Challenge: Rock Lee vs. Sasuke!"
As they leave, Rock Lee appears again and challenges Sasuke to a battle. Initially refusing, Sasuke changes his mind when Lee effortlessly defeats Naruto. Even Sasuke's Sharingan is no match for Lee's taijutsu. Before any harm can come to Sasuke, Lee's sensei and the self-proclaimed eternal rival of Kakashi Hatake, Might Guy, appears and stops the attack. After assigning Lee a punishment, the two leave, allowing Team 7 to proceed.

Episode 23 "Genin Takedown! All Nine Rookies Face Off!"
Upon arriving at the location of the first part of the exams, Team 7 meets with Team 10 members Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara, and Choji Akimichi as well as Team 8 members Shino Aburame, Hinata Hyuga, and Kiba Inuzuka. The group is befriended by exam veteran Kabuto Yakushi, who offers the nine information on their competitors. His remarks about the Land of Sound, however, touch a nerve with the Sound Genin present, and is attacked as such. Before the fight can progress, Ibiki Morino and several Chunin appear.

Episode 24 "Start Your Engines: The Chunin Exam Begins"
As everyone takes their seat, Ibiki explains that the the first phase of the exam will be a written test. Additionally, he explains that those caught cheating will have points deducted from their score, and that anyone who runs out of points will fail along with the rest of their team. When the questions on the test prove to be too difficult for a Genin to answer, it becomes clear that the purpose of the test is to cheat without being caught. As people begin to cheat, people also start getting caught and disqualified. Naruto, unaware that he is supposed to cheat, contemplates what he should do. Unable to answer any of the questions, he puts all his faith in the final question, which will be given fifteen minutes before the test's end.

Episode 25 "The Tenth Question: All or Nothing"
When the time for the last question arrives, the Genin are given an offer: forfeit now and be allowed to take the exam again next time, or accept the last question. However, failing the last question would mean never being allowed to take part in the exams again, and thus remaining a Genin forever. The possibility of never getting to take the test again proves too much for many students, and a number of teams leave. After struggling with his decision, Naruto declares in an inspiring monologue that he won't back down from the question no matter what might happen, motivating the remaining Genin to stay. With that, Ibiki passes the remaining Genin; the correct answer to the tenth question was to stay. The remaining Genin are left to the next instructor, Anko Mitarashi, who takes them all to the Forest of Death.

Chunin Exam arc: Phase Two
Episode 27 "Special Report: Live From the Forest of Death"

Before the second exam can begin, Konohamaru and his friends pull the members of Team 7 aside for interviews, where they retell their adventures up to this point.

Episode 27 "The Chunin Exam Stage 2: The Forest of Death"

Anko briefs the candidates on their goal for the second portion of the exam. All teams are given one of two scrolls: a Heaven Scroll or an Earth Scroll. They will spend the next five days in the forest and compete with other teams to get one of each scroll by any means necessary, at which point they will head to the tower in the center of the forest. Soon enough, the proctor hands out scrolls and opens the forest gates. None of the teams waste any time - Naruto's team is attacked immediately.

Episode 28 "Eat or Be Eaten: Panic in the Forest"
Sasuke quickly drives away the attacking Rain Genin. Their moment of peace is short lived, as a powerful gust of wind separates Naruto from his team. Just as he reorients himself, Naruto is swallowed whole by a giant snake. In the mean time, Sasuke and Sakura are quickly disabled by a Grass ninja. Before they even fight, Sasuke and Sakura have visions of their own deaths upon looking into his eyes, paralyzing them with fear. Regaining his composure just before a would-be fatal blow, Sasuke flees with Sakura. The ninja pursues them, but Naruto, having killed the snake, arrives in time to save both.

Episode 29 "Naruto's Counterattack: Never Give In!"
Despite Naruto's timely appearance, Sasuke is more than willing to sacrifice their scroll to ensure their survival. Naruto begins fighting the Grass ninja and his snakes, tapping into the demon fox's chakra in the process. The ninja, recognizing Naruto as the demon fox's container, seals the demon fox's chakra, rendering him unconscious. Naruto's efforts, however, rejuvenate Sasuke with determination, and he prepares to battle the Grass ninja.

Episode 30 "The Sharingan Revived: Dragon Flame Jutsu!"
Sasuke and the Grass ninja engage in combat. After a long, difficult battle, Sasuke seemingly ends the battle with blast of fire to the ninja's face. However, the ninja awakens with his face partially melted off, revealing another face underneath. Extending his neck, he bites Sasuke and leaves behind a cursed seal. The ninja reveals himself to be Orochimaru, wishes Sasuke luck in surviving, and leaves. Anko finds Orochimaru and attacks him, intent on killing her former sensei for his crimes, even at the potential cost of her own life.

Episode 31 "Bushy Brow's Pledge: Undying Love and Protection"
Sakura takes care of her teammates, both of whom are still unconscious from Orochimaru's attack. The three Sound Genin that attacked Kabuto in the test room, sent by Orochimaru to kill Sasuke, observe their target from a distance, and eventually approach Sakura. Despite Sakura's best efforts at laying traps, the Sound Genin evade her obstacles and prepare to attack. A stray Rock Lee appears to protect Sakura. Though he holds his own for a while, he attempts his Front Lotus, an attack that uses more muscle strength than the average human body produces at once. The attack proves ineffective, and the weakened Lee is quickly knocked out.

Episode 32 "Sakura Blossoms!"
With Lee unconscious, Sakura has to defend by herself. One of the Sound Genin, Kin Tsuchi, takes hold of her hair and ridicules her for spending so much time on her looks, this remark spurs her into cutting her hair to free herself from Kin's grasp. Freed, Sakura battles Zaku Abumi, though he quickly gains the advantage. Despite this, Sakura perseveres, causing Team 10 to come to her aide.

Team 10 battles the Sound Genin, and Ino possesses Kin, rendering both of them unable to fight. However, the Sound Genin still manage to hold their own. Just as Lee's teammates appear to join the fight, Sasuke awakens, the cursed seal given to him by Orochimaru engulfing him. Noticing Sakura's wounds, Sasuke begins attacking Zaku in retaliation, eventually breaking both of his arms without mercy. As Sasuke turns his attention to the final Sound Genin, Dosu Kinuta, Sakura catches him in an embrace begging him to stop. The cursed seal recedes, and the Sound Genin flee.

As Team 7, Team 10, and Team Guy recover, Team 8 witnesses Gaara mercilessly kill a team of Rain Genin. Although Gaara prepares to turn his attention to Team 8, his siblings persuade him to leave them alone. Gaara's team shatters the record for reaching the tower, reaching their destination in about an hour and Gaara does not have so much as a speck of dirt on his clothes.

Episode 35 "The Scroll's Secret: No Peeking Allowed"
In need of a second scroll, an awakened Naruto contemplates forging a new scroll, though he'll first need to read the scroll he already has. Before he does so, Kabuto arrives to stop him, citing that those who read the scroll are rendered unconscious until the exam's end; a rival team tries to open their scroll, and suffers this fate. Kabuto, separated from his teammates, accompanies Team 7 to the tower at the center of the forest. Along the way, the group encounters a disorienting genjutsu set by the teammates of the Rain Genin Sasuke had earlier defeated. By the time they realize that they are not getting any closer to the center of the forest, it is too late; they are attacked by a number of clones.

The team realizes soon enough that the clones are not physical; they are in fact another genjutsu. In order to draw out the assailants, Naruto disguises several of his shadow clones as his teammates and fights the enemy clones all night. When the Rain Genin team believe that the entire team was exhausted from combat, Kabuto, Sakura, and Sasuke corner them. After a brief struggle, Naruto knocks out the enemies and takes their scroll, at which point they head to the tower and meet with Kabuto's team. Unknown to Naruto and friends, Kabuto submits all of the data he gathered on them to Orochimaru.

Team 7 opens its scrolls inside the tower, summoning Iruka to inform them that they made it in time. The Third Hokage briefly speaks about the exams and leaves Hayate Gekko in charge.

Kabuto drops out immediately upon the notice, blaming his withdrawal on an injury sustained from an earlier part of the test; however, he worries to himself that if he participated, the "old [Kabuto] might come out." Kakashi takes him to an isolated location to hinder the cursed seal, only to be confronted by Orochimaru as he finishes. Back at the tower, Shino Aburame and Zaku Abumi begin the next match.

As she prepares to force Sakura to forfeit, Naruto cheers Sakura on and inadvertently awakens Inner Sakura, who forces Ino out of her body. Both drained of their chakra, the rivals knock each other out in one climactic punch, resulting in a double knockout. Neither candidate advances to the final stage.

Shikamaru Nara and Kin Tsuchi take to the battlefield next. While it appears that Kin is on the verge of winning due to hallucinations induced by her bells, Shikamaru sneaks his shadow under threads held by his opponent, activating the Shadow Imitation Technique and taking control of her. At that point, he knocks her out by making her slam her head into a wall. The next combatants are revealed to be Naruto and Kiba Inuzuka.

Once Kiba calms down, he regains control of the battle. He and Akamaru consume special pills that restore and double their chakra. Once powered up, Kiba and Akamaru use a combination of Four Legs Technique and Beast Human Clone to overwhelm Naruto with two beastly opponents. Although Naruto falls, his desire to win only increases with Kiba's taunts.

Using Kiba's own smokescreen as a cover, Naruto disguises himself as a third Kiba through use of the Transformation Technique and tricks Kiba into knocking Akamaru out, which only serves to anger Kiba. Naruto, however, is still at a disadvantage due to Kiba's pill-enhanced chakra and superior speed. Furthermore, Orochimaru's seal disrupts his already low chakra reserves, hindering Naruto's ability to build up enough chakra for his new technique. Kiba's onslaught ends when Naruto accidentally flatulates in Kiba's face, stunning him due to his enhanced sense of smell. Naruto then finishes the battle with Naruto Uzumaki Combo, a technique he based off of Sasuke's winning move that utilizes his shadow clones.

Episode 46 "Byakugan Battle: Hinata Grows Bold!"
Hinata's match is against Neji Hyuga, her cousin from the branch house of the the Hyuga clan. Neji intimidates and berates his cousin, and she seems ready to forfeit. Tired of his taunts, Naruto cheers Hinata on, giving her the strength to fight back. Hinata and Neji fight each other using Hyuga-style Gentle Fist taijutsu, which uses bursts of chakra to damage the opponent's internal organs. Both appear to strike at the each others' heart before a sudden break in the action.

Episode 47 "A Failure Stands Tall!"
Pulling back Hinata's sleeve, Neji reveals that he had hit several points on her arm called tenketsu, special glands that produce and maintain the flow of chakra, during their close combat. With all of them tapped, Hinata's chakra flow to her hand is effectively cut off and her blow to Neji's heart has no effect. Neji continues his assault, but Hinata continues to stand up, inspired by Naruto. She tells him that she believes that he is suffering more from fighting his destiny. Angered, Neji attempts a fatal blow, but several observing Jonin halt him. Hinata collapses into cardiac arrest shortly after, and Naruto vows to avenge her.

After a long wait, Rock Lee is set to fight against Gaara. At first, it seems as though Lee's Strong Fist taijutsu is ineffective because of Gaara's Shield of Sand, a wall of sand that automatically rises to protect Gaara regardless of his will. Lee's speed proves too much for Gaara, and his sand is no longer able to form a shield fast enough to be of use. Lee opens the Fifth Gate and uses his most powerful attack, Reverse Lotus. Unfortunately for Lee, Gaara survives this final blow by softening his fall with sand and uses the sand to crush Lee's left arm and leg. Gaara moves his sand to finish Lee, but Guy jumps in to protect his student. Lee, though unconscious due to the pain, rises to continue the battle, his desire to win fueling his broken body. Guy cries for Lee's dedication, and Lee is taken away to recover. The medical ninja announce that Lee's injuries are too severe to be completely healed and that he will never be able to fight as a ninja again. Guy regrets teaching Lee such dangerous techniques, but vacates the ring for the final match between Choji Akimichi and Dosu Kinuta.

Afterwards, Jiraiya speaks with Naruto about his two kinds of chakra.

That night, Dosu Kinuta, a finalist for the Chunin Exams, approaches Gaara, another finalist. Dosu intends to kill Gaara, but Gaara butchers him before he has a chance. Observing from a distance, Baki and Kabuto Yakushi confer about the planned invasion of Konohagakure by Sunagakure and Otogakure. Baki kills the eavesdropping Hayate Gekko immediately afterwards. The next day, Naruto resumes his training with Jiraiya. He signs a scroll that will allow him to summon toads. Upon trying to summon a toad, Naruto only manages to summon a tadpole.

Although Naruto doesn't have enough strength to last until sunset, he earns Gamabunta's respect. Gamabunta takes Naruto to the hospital to rest.

When questioned why he attempted to finish the job, Gaara explains that his reason for existing is to kill everyone, and reveals that he, like Naruto, was alone for much of his childhood, hated and feared by the villagers for being a host of a tailed beast. Gaara prepares to kill Naruto and Shikamaru as well, but is stopped by the arrival of Might Guy, Lee's sensei, and leaves.

Even though he could no longer fight, Naruto refuses to give up. Neji then reveals the history of the Hyuga clan and how his father was killed to save the life of his uncle, due only to the fact that his father was born second. Neji goes on to elaborate his ideas that fate is determined at birth, and that no matter what one does, nobody can escape their destiny.

Determined to prove Neji wrong, Naruto draws on the demon fox's strength, surprising many of the older ninja present for Naruto's ability to use and control the fox's chakra. Naruto attacks Neji with increased speed and strength, and the latter is only barely able to keep up. As the two forces collide, an explosion occurs, and the two are thrown into craters. Neji rises from his own, preparing to lecture his unconscious opponent. Naruto bursts from the ground beneath him and punches him in the jaw; the Naruto in the opposite pit was a shadow clone. Unable to get up, Neji berates himself for falling for Naruto's signature jutsu, to which Naruto explains that it was once his worst technique. Episode 63 "Hit It or Quit It: The Final Rounds Get Complicated!"
When Neji is taken away to recover, his uncle tries to tell Neji of the truth of his father's death, saying that he had given up his life to save his brother, not a member of the main house. Neji is unbelieving, but his reading his father's final letter and seeing his uncle bowing for forgiveness causes him to realize the truth. Meanwhile, the match between Sasuke Uchiha and Gaara is postponed due to Sasuke's absence, and the match between Shino Aburame and Kankuro is set to start. Kankuro forfeits, having expected the invasion of Konoha to have started before his match. The next combatants, Shikamaru and Temari, go down to the stadium.

Episode 64 "Zero Motivation: The Guy with Cloud Envy!"
Though initially unwilling, Shikamaru fights Temari because he refuses to lose to a girl. Shikamaru quickly studies the arena and its elements and comes up with a plan. Despite this, Temari has seen Shikamaru's primary attack in action and knows how it works. It appears that Temari is able to evade Shikamaru's technique and adapt to his tactics; however Shikamaru had been luring her to the tunnel Naruto created in the previous match. Shikamaru catches her in his trap through use of the tunnel and clearly has the match won, but he forfeits at the last second, claiming to have exerted too much chakra in capturing Temari to fight later battles.

Episode 65 "Dancing Leaf, Squirming Sand"
With Sasuke and Gaara's match needing to start, the Third Hokage sets a time limit for Sasuke to arrive. Sasuke arrives at the last minute with Kakashi Hatake, and Gaara arrives in the arena to start their match.

Episode 66 "Bushy Brow's Jutsu: Sasuke Style!"
Using the speed and taijutsu abilities he gained during his training, Sasuke is able to bypass Gaara's sand-based defenses with ease. Determined to kill Sasuke, Gaara retreats inside his Sphere of Sand to begin his transformation.

Episode 67 "Late for the Show, but Ready to Go! The Ultimate Secret Technique is Born!"
With Gaara unable to move while within his shield, and Sasuke unable to break through its defenses, Sasuke decides to use his new technique: the Chidori. With it, Sasuke is able to pierce Gaara's shield, stopping his transformation, and becoming the second person to ever injure Gaara. At that moment, Kabuto Yakushi uses a genjutsu to put the audience to sleep, signaling the start of Konoha's invasion.
